Degradable:

Technically, all plastic is degradable. It can be crushed and shredded into little pieces and will eventually break down completely. However, it will never disappear ( d2w products). What is important for the environment is that the material is biodegradable or compostable.

Biodegradable:

Biodegradable plastics are plastics that can be decomposed by the action of living organisms, usually bacteria. When a plastic is biodegradable it facilitates a process called biodegradation. When classifying a plastic as a biodegradable, the environment and timeframe must be specified; otherwise the claim is rendered pointless, since, the rate of biodegradation of different organic materials may vary in a exponential scale up to thousands of years.

Compostable:

Compostable plastic is both degradable and biodegradable. According to scientific standards, for plastic to be labelled compostable, microbiological action must occur at a speed equal to that of materials that are compostable: leaves, paper, food waste, among others. 90% of it must biodegrade within 180 days of being in a compost pile, it must be made up of organic materials and it must not leave behind toxic nor visible residue once it has broken down.
